Chapter Twenty

The Iris

Looking down at Arian, Ansley paused with curious interest. It had been so many years since he had known peaceful sleep, devoid of nightmares, that it was nice to witness it in someone else. He almost regretted waking him as he bent down to shake the kid. One would have thought he was dead had it not been for his intermittent snoring through the night. It was like sleeping in the same room as Jabari. Upon the third shaking, Arian stirred and woke, blinking and searching the room, confused by his surroundings.

“Get up Arian. Today is our big day.”

Arian looked at him, disoriented and half asleep. “Let me sleep a little longer.” He pulled the covers over his head and turned away from Ansley.

“Who the hell am I trying to work with?” Ansley muttered to himself. “Wake the fuck up!” he shouted, grabbing the edge of the bed and tipping it, spilling Arian onto the floor.

“What the hell!” Arian moved his arms, removing the blankets that covered his face, awake now. Surveying the strange environment, he now saw that he was in a small room drilled within the cliff face. There were two beds, a small dresser with a mirror over it, and nothing else.

Running his hand through his hair and shaking himself awake, Arian looked to Ansley.

“You’re an asshole.”

“Just get ready. We have much to do today.”

Arian walked to the dresser and looked at his reflection in the mirror.

“Damn. I look like hell. Is this what Desert Snake shots do?”

“It’s what they do to amateurs. Now come on. I have a lot to show you.”

“Don’t I get to shower?”

“You aren’t in the dome kid. You are in a hidden bunker in the Natural World. Make do.”

“Or a bathroom?”

Ansley nodded. “Follow me.”

They walked down a hallway dug out of the rock and entered a tiny restroom. As Arian moved to the stall and relieved the pressure in his bladder, he tried to remember how he had come to be in these rocky compartments. Washing his hands and splashing the lukewarm water onto his face, he heard Ansley speaking to someone outside. He walked out and found Ansley alone.

“Who were you talking to? You have no qubit.”

Ansley laughed. “Ever heard of short-wave radio? Kid, we are in a different world. Perhaps you will meet a few other ghosts from the past as well. You are about to find out why I am considered to be a member of the so-called Centauri.”

“I can’t wait.”

“That’s funny,” barked Ansley. “You will most likely die over this. Your mother did. Keep laughing, it’s about to get real.” The serious tone surprised Arian and had the desired effect of gaining his full attention.

At the end of the hallway was a steel door. Ansley typed in a code, and it unlocked with a loud thud, swinging ajar. He used his shoulder and body weight to push it inward. Arian jumped in to help. On the other side, they were met by the looming figure of Jabari Stoudamyre.
